Corpus Spongiosum (LP)



This low power picture shows part of the penile urethra on the right, the corpus cavernosum and the tunica albuginia on the left.

The erectile tissue of the penis consists of cavernous spaces which are surrounded by smooth muscle fibres. The smooth muscle cells stain brighter pink than the adjacent tissue which allows these vessels to be clearly seen towards the periphery of the corpus cavernosum. The erectile tissue is supplied by helicine arteries which are spirally arranged in a flaccid penis.
