SUPPLEMENTARY:
Dividing bronchus showing a lymph node


This section shows the point of division of a bronchus. There is frequently (1) a lymph node in the submucosa at this site and one can be seen in this section above the lumina of the two bronchi. Lymph nodes contain many small lymphocytes which stain deeply purple with haematoxylin.

These nodes are part of the deep lymphatic drainage of the lung and eventually drain to an important group of nodes which surround the bifurcation of the trachea. Bronchial lymph nodes may become involved in the spread of lung cancer.
