SUPPLEMENTARY:
Bronchial glands (HP)

The bronchial glands are serous glands which lie in the submucosa. The cells are arranged in small spherical groups around a lumen. The watery secretion produced by these cells is carried via ducts which pierce the smooth muscle and lamina propria and empty on to the surface of the epithelium.

As the air passes through the conducting part of the respiratory system, it is conditioned. The secretions from the bronchial glands and goblet cells of the epithelium create a wet epithelial surface which moistens the air to improve the diffusion rate of oxygen and cleans it by trapping inhaled particles. A rich superficial vascular network within the bronchial walls warms the air.
